Red, Blue, Yellow, or Green: What's Your DISC Public Speaking Style?
How Your DISC Color Influences Your Presentation Style and How to Improve It.
The DISC model categorizes personalities into four types and colors: "Dominant" Red, "Influential" Yellow, "Steady" Green, and "Compliant" Blue.
If we naturally have one or two preferred colors for our personality, the goal isn't to stick to one style but to understand where our strengths lie and where we might need balance.
In this article, I'll explore how each DISC color manifests during presentations and practical tips to help you become a more balanced speaker.
Red: The Action-Oriented Leader (Dominant)
Overview: Red personalities are all about action and results. They are quick decision-makers and highly focused on getting things done.
• Strengths: As a presenter, reds are dynamic, direct, and decisive. They often make a strong impression with their energy and ability to cut to the chase.
• Typical Presentation Behavior: Reds like to get straight to the point. They tend to focus on solutions rather than spending too much time on background or context. Their talks are often efficient but fast-paced.
• Weaknesses: Their desire to move quickly can result in a lack of context or explanation, leaving the audience feeling rushed or disconnected. In extreme cases, their presentation style may come across as top-down or even authoritarian.
• Effect on the Audience: While the audience may appreciate the clarity and decisiveness, they may struggle to keep up or feel that they're being lectured.
• Tips for Improvement: Reds can benefit from slowing down and incorporating more context into their talks. Using pauses and taking the time to explain the "why" behind the solutions can help the audience stay engaged and connected.
Yellow: The Enthusiastic Motivator (Influential)
Overview: Yellow personalities are energetic, enthusiastic, and people-focused. They love interacting with their audience and bring a lot of charisma to their talks.
• Strengths: Yellows are often inspiring speakers, full of energy and creativity. They excel at keeping their audience engaged through questions and interaction.
• Typical Presentation Behavior: Yellows often focus on the energy of the room, prioritizing audience engagement and maintaining a lively atmosphere. They love using humor and storytelling to connect with the crowd.
• Weaknesses: However, yellows can sometimes lose structure in their presentations. In their eagerness to entertain and engage, they may struggle to deliver a clear, focused message.
• Effect on the Audience: The audience will likely enjoy the experience and feel motivated, but they may not leave with a clear understanding of the key points or takeaways.
• Tips for Improvement: Yellows should focus on organizing their presentations around a few key messages. While maintaining their energy, they can use visuals or clear transitions to ensure their audience remembers the main ideas.
Green: The Empathetic Connector (Steady)
Overview: Green personalities are empathetic and relationship-oriented. They are great at creating trust and connection with their audience.
• Strengths: Greens are often very relatable and can create a warm, comfortable environment for their audience. Their presentations are filled with personal stories and genuine emotions, which fosters a strong sense of trust.
• Typical Presentation Behavior: Greens are natural storytellers. They use anecdotes to build empathy and prefer a conversational style, making the audience feel included and heard.
• Weaknesses: Greens often use softer words to be more nuanced and leave room for opinions, which can make their message feel too general or uncertain.
• Effect on the Audience: While the audience may appreciate the emotional connection and feel valued, they might leave without a clear understanding of the key arguments or rational conclusions.
• Tips for Improvement: Greens should be more assertive when delivering their key messages. It's essential to complement empathy and connection with clear, confident statements and structured conclusions that give the audience something concrete to take away.
Blue: The Analytical Expert (Compliant)
Overview: Blue personalities are methodical and detail-oriented. They value accuracy and logic, reflected in how they prepare and deliver presentations.
• Strengths: Blues excel at explaining complex ideas in a clear, structured way. Their presentations are often well-researched and packed with valuable data.
• Typical Presentation Behavior: Blues are thorough and methodical in their delivery. They often focus heavily on facts and data, assuming that providing information is in itself sufficient to persuade the audience.
• Weaknesses: Their presentations can be too dense, overly detailed, or too theoretical, which might cause the audience to lose interest. They may also neglect storytelling or practical examples that could make their message more relatable.
• Effect on the Audience: While some may appreciate the depth of knowledge, others could find the presentation too abstract or overwhelming. The lack of emotional engagement might cause people to tune out.
• Tips for Improvement: Blues should try to simplify complex ideas with concrete examples or metaphors. Adding personal anecdotes or humanizing their data can make their presentations more engaging and easier to follow.
Conclusion: Balance is Key
No one is bound by a single color: each of us uses different strengths in different situations, and that's what makes us effective communicators.
The goal is not to limit ourselves but to understand how we can adapt our style based on the audience, the context, and the effect we want to create. Finding your balance between the DISC colors, and how to muster the corresponding style, will drastically enhance your ability to connect, engage, and inspire.
